Olympia’s chat

First, thanks to those who attended the AGM on Sunday April 3rd. It was lovely to welcome three new committee members – Debbie, Judy and Gwen, but sadly, no takers for the President, so, good or bad, it’s still me. One final year.

Hopefully everyone has paid their subs by now - $50.00 before the end of March then $60.00 - $5.00 for each attending day. This is all important for ongoing insurance and building expenses.

Our Mural

A real team effort as we started 3 weeks early with the fantastic but detailed drawing Phil had designed for the mural for MPAT. It was a successful venture for the club and the publicity was great both from the Dom/Post and local papers.

Special thanks to Linda Smith who persevered for almost a year for funding from Creative NZ (WCC), City-Care for cutting forty one tiles and installing the grid. (They also graffiti-proofed the finished mural - free of charge.) - and also Resene who provided the paint. Linda and Phil Dickson spent weeks measuring and numbering each tile after we primed the boards and Lucille was busily face booking all that time. Local builder John Herrick admired the work as he was cycling by on the Saturday and offered to return the following day to help install each tile onto the grid, showing wonderful community spirit.

Grant, the community centre co-ordinator tells us visitors to the playground stop and talk about Miramar’s history, and our neighbour, Elizabeth, has the best view from her kitchen window!

Winter Art at Malvina Major

We are now gearing up to take part in a winter art exhibition
at Malvina Major over the
weekend August 20th – 21st, opening Friday 19th August.

Please deliver your art to the club by Thursday, well wrapped for van delivery on the Friday morning. All care and no responsibility.

This is not solely for WAC members but our screens will be required. Linda and I met with Bronwyn at Malvina Major to discuss and space may be limited, so at this stage only one painting please, but we’re hoping for ‘cash and carry’ so there may be room for spares. Each artist will have to provide an Artist Profile and jpeg of your piece of work as a catalogue will be made for patrons to take away. Please email to me:
olympiaoz@hotmail.com and I will forward to Bronwyn.

Guidelines

Please take good notice of our guidelines. The committee are all volunteers and no one should be put on the spot in future about their decisions. Each decision will be put before the committee for discussion.

Life drawing

Thanks to Chris Anderson’s efforts and continued perseverance, the Life Class is thriving and enjoyed by members and many people from WETA. Mark and Gabriel are overseeing the class and have the same enthusiasm as Chris has had. We hope to see that you do come by Chris, though glad to see that you and Jenny are thoroughly enjoying your move to Kapiti.

Club Mural

We are Miramar’s best kept secret and I have wanted to colour the stark walls of our own building to make it noticeable and welcoming. The wonderful Mary Mitchell has taken on producing an ‘arty’ mural, with Phil’s assistance ready as always. Juliet Best (Shelly Bay) came to view our rooms for a workshop and commented: “Your workspace is stunning – you are very lucky to have such a beautiful space and you are so talented with so much inspiring and beautiful work on the walls”.

And then, hopefully we can get back to some of our own actual painting!
