Last day of Art Club for 2019

Friday 20th December

Monday night
(life Class)
January 13th, 2020

The committee and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

We seem to have had an extra busy year this year with our two exhibitions, both of which showed a profit over $1200 - see results below

We have been experimenting with different ways to streamline things, particularly the exhibitions and are pleased to say we’ve got the van loading and unloading down to a 'fine art', from about 45 minutes to 15 minutes, thanks to the new lighter screens! Of course a big thank you once again to Graham and Linda for kindly lending that van.

We also feel we have come up with the definitive way of presenting the picture captions (labels), thanks to Charlotte Hird’s professional input. One of the strengths of these labels is that they can be easily transported from the exhibition back to the club, to display above your painting on the club's picture rails.

Eight new members have been welcomed to the club this year, they are:
Gary Abel, Sam Balzar, Kim Barelle, Peter Bygraves, Derek McCorkindale, Barbara Pond-Ryan, Pari Sathyanarayana and Christine Strang.

Hope to see you all again next year!

Happy holidays,

Rita Angus Sales 2019

Fifteen paintings with a value of $3,640 were sold. The successful artists were Roger Buchanan, Claire Clark, Eric Dyne, Charlotte Hird, Sue Johnson, Olympia Osborne, Rita Quirk, Vanda Safey, Denis Slowley, Linda Smith and Del Te Rito.

Richard Acey, Sheila Playford, Judith Royal and Sudha Shenoy also sold unframed works, Phil Dickson again sold more copies of his wonderful book and Sheila Playford, Annette Straugheir and Judith Royal were successful with card sales.

The club made a nett profit from the event of $1,265, derived from entry fees and commissions from sales less minor costs. As is now customary, the club will provide 15% of this profit to Ryman’s chosen charity in recognition of their provision of the exhibition facilities and the opening night reception.

The two raffles this year, painted by past president Joan Coleman

Coromandel Country (oil) and Boatshed Scorching Bay (watercolour)

Joan Coleman's family kindly donated these two paintings to the club. Joan was an artist, tutor and past president of The Wellington Art Club 1981 -1988. She painted in watercolour, pastels and oils and was a tutor at The Wellington Art Club and Wellington High. Joan was instrumental in organizing the present Wellington Art Club building on its site in Chelsea Street, Miramar.

She became a Life Member of the club in 1988 and is remembered fondly by members of the Wellington Art Club.

Workshops Reports

Sheila Playford ran an Alcohol Ink workshop on the 13th of April. It was a lot of fun learning how to make beautiful abstract patterns on tiles or card. Sheila was a very patient teacher as well, which helped. Do look out for her workshop next year, you won't be disappointed!

We also thank Sheila for co-ordinating most of the six workshops this year. Thanks Sheila.

Sam Balzer from Weta workshop, hired the club rooms for a sculpture workshop on a weekend in July. It was mainly for 'Weta' people but Art Club member, Charlotte Hird did attend. A very professional workshop, not for beginners.

Professional teacher Robyn Eastgate Manning ran a workshop on the 31st of August, mainly in acrylics and watercolour. It was a lot of fun and everyone learnt lots of tips and 'tricks of the trade' and came away with at least two lovely paintings.

"Dreams" by Miranda Munro
Miranda has run a variety of her Transformative Art (abstract) classes throughout the year. They're always popular and the club really appreciates her contribution.
Look out for her classes again next year!

Charlotte Hird's Perspective Workshop
'I was pleased to have the oppportunity to attend Charlotte's drawing workshop at the Art Club. Charlotte has excellent teaching skills that clearly guided us through the intricacies of point one, two and three perspective drawing in a relaxed and happy environment. I came away with confidence and a renewed interest in drawing.

Courses in the basics such as these can encourage people who have never painted to come and have a go. Take up a pencil or pen and create something. Maybe add a bit of paint, become hooked and join the Wellington Art Club.'

Kerry Montgomery

NB. Charlotte Hird will be running another PERSECTIVE WORKSHOP at the Art Club May 2nd and 3rd of Next year!
